It is no secret that Donald Trump and most of the social media websites don’t get along and he has been banned from most of them, including Facebook and X formally known as Twitter. While his ban on X was lifted by Elon Musk, he chose not to return and stayed on his own social media platform Truth Social.
But there is one social media platform, on which both Donald Trump and other lawmakers from both sides seem to have a similar stance and that is TikTok. The social media app is owned and operated by ByteDance a Chinese company and lawmakers in the US believe that data of US citizens from TikTok is shared with the Chinese government.
For this very reason, government employees in 34 states were banned from using TikTok on their government-provided smart devices and now there is a bill circulating in Congress to ban the app entirely. Donald Trump had previously supported the ban but now it seems he has changed his stance. (Traylor, 2024)
While he still believes that TitkTok is a national security threat he no longer supports the ban. When asked why he does not support the ban anymore, he did not give a direct answer but did say that if TikTok were to be banned, more people would go on Facebook and he considers Facebook to be an enemy of the people and the media.
