Getting a nice scent can be challenging if you are not familiar with different notes and their fragrances. To buy a perfume one must know what family it belongs to and its different notes. It would help a lot in clearing your mind from the confusion of choosing a scent when so many options are available. And it is a common practice that one gets indecisive when so many options are laid in front of him.

Fragrance Wheel

Before moving forward it is important to know what a fragrance wheel is. The fragrance wheel somewhat looks like a circle that represents different scent families and subfamilies. The scents are clustered based on their correspondences and differences to demonstrate their relationship to one another. She scents that are close to each other have common olfactory characteristics and the ones far apart are less related.

Different types of scent families

There are total 4 main categories in which scent families are divided and they are:





Each family is further divided into its subfamilies. It is to be noted that every scent family has different set of characteristics. It is not necessary that you’ll find every scent labeled with its family when you go shopping so in that case you should be able to find out which constituents make up the fragrance. People who are familiar with the scent families can tell in one sniff that which family a particular scent belongs to.  So, let’s study each scent family in detail.

Floral Family

 Floral scents are most often used in women’s fragrances. It is one of the most common families and is used in many well-known perfumes. The fragrance it gives is more like of fresh cut flowers. There are many best perfumes in Pakistan with a floral and soft fragrance that is perfect for every season. The Floral family is further divided into four subfamilies and they are


It is sweet, edible. It is a sweet mixture of apple, peach and pear.

Soft Floral

It is soft, powdery and sweet with a touch of creamy.


 Smells like fresh-cut flowers, rose, and lily.

Floral oriental

It has subtle spice notes

These are the subfamilies in which floral is divided. It has some common family notes as well that are Jasmine, Rose, and Orange Blossom.

Oriental Family

This family consists of rich and exotic scents. Its notes are more like herb and spices and powdery dry.  Opulent and heady, these notes are oftentimes softened with amber or sweet notes. This family is well known for its exotic and seductive fragrance. The Oriental family is further divided into three subfamilies.

Soft oriental

 Soft, floral notes mixed with incense and warm spices.

Woody oriental

It has earthy notes like patchouli and sandalwood that are mixed with spicy and sweet notes.


Sweet, warm notes like cinnamon, musk, and vanilla.

These are the subfamilies in which Oriental is divided. It has some common family notes as well that are Anise, Myrrh, and Vanilla.

Woods Family

These perfumes are usually warm and rich, mixing incense-like fragrances like sandalwood and patchouli with drier notes like cedar.  Notes in this family are termed as coniferous or woody and bitter. The warm notes are mixed with fresh notes like floral or citrus. The Woods family is further divided into three subfamilies.

Mossy Woods

 It is sweet, smooth and earthy like oakmoss, and amber.


Aromatic scents like cedarwood, sandalwood and vetiver.

Dry Woods

 Blazing and smoky mixed with leather aromas.

  • These are the subfamilies in which Woods is divided. It has some common family notes as well that are Patchouli, Vetiver, and Sandal.


Vetiver – Carven

Mitsouko – Guerlain

Polo – Ralph Lauren

Fresh Family

It represents clean and bright scents. The notes of this family are herby, citrusy and oceanic. It is mostly used in men’s fragrance. Fresh scents of this family are mixed with spicy notes to create a strong fragrance. The Fresh family is further divided into four subfamilies.


 Tangy notes like mandarins or bergamot.


 It smells like a freshly and newly mowed lawns and crinkled green leaves.


Clean and fresh herbs merged with lavender scents.


 Aquatic scents that smell like or rain mixed with oceanic notes.

These are the subfamilies in which the Fresh family is divided. It has some common family notes as well that are bergamot, sage, and grapeftuit.
