Boats are expensive. Boat maintenance is similar to maintaining an automobile. You have some fixed places to check regularly and maintain a few things every month to prevent serious damage.
If you are new in the boating business, or just bought a boat for yourself, you should know how to maintain the good shape of your vehicle. With a little negligence, you might have to face life-threatening situations. Here is what you should be aware of when you own a boat.
1. Look Out For Engine Health
The engine of your boat should always be up and running. When you are out in the water, engine failure may result in serious consequences, therefore, make sure that you are keeping an eye on the boat’s engine.
Make sure there is no oil leakage. Your onboard and outboard parts of the engine should be well-maintained. Make sure there is no water in the outboard, and that it is properly fixed to the transom.
2. Flush The Engine Regularly
Flush the engine after every trip to the sea. Whether you are boating in freshwater or saltwater, make sure to flush the engine properly every time you return to the marina.
When you are boating in saltwater, salts and other minerals may enter the engine and when you ignore flushing, these salts will start to deposit over time. This can make things difficult for you. Mud, sand, and curd can accumulate when you boat in freshwater. Some outboard motors come with a built-in flushing system. If your engine does not have one, make sure to flush externally.
3. Designate A Dry Area On On-board
Your boat should have a dry storage area on board. You should store all your life jackets, water toys, and other maintenance equipment in this dry storage area. This can save you from a lot of extra work.
When you do not pay attention to your moist or soaking equipment, it will start getting slimy and molds may start to grow. This can get very ugly and you might have to throw away a few things. Keeping everything dry can save you a lot of trouble.
4. Pay Attention To Flooring
Most cockpit floors are self-draining. In case water enters the boat, it will eventually drain out on its own. However, if you have carpeted floors, you should remove the carpet once in a while. When you remove the carpet you will notice the amount of dust, debris, food crumbs, and whatnot accumulated on the floor beneath.
Take the carpet out and shake it. Vacuum the dirt and dust and pressure wash the carpet. Let it dry completely before you place it back on the boat.
5. Mind The Upholstery
Upholstery can get dirty with sand, dust, and mucky water. If you avoid the accumulation, it can get harder to clean later. You might have to scrub harder which can make things difficult for you.
Maintain your boat’s upholstery by cleaning it regularly. You can invest in cleaning products like scrubbers, polish, and cleaning soaps to keep the upholstery tidy.
