Boston is home to some of the most respected sports teams in the world. From the New England Patriots to the Boston Red Sox, it’s no wonder that Boston sports fans are loyal and always looking for a reason to cheer.
The city has four major professional teams – the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins and the Boston Celtics. Each of these have won multiple championships and are well respected around the country.
The Red Sox
Boston’s baseball team has a long and rich history that dates back to the founding of the American League in 1901. Known as the Boston Americans (unofficially) at the time, the Sox finished second in their first season and won the first World Series in 1903.
The name “Sox” was chosen by owner John I. Taylor c. 1908, after adopting it from the Boston Red Stockings (the team’s original name).
It is the third-most-popular team in Major League Baseball. Fenway Park, their home ballpark since 1912, is one of the oldest and most famous in the sport.
The Sox have won nine World Series titles, tied for the most among MLB teams. They have also won the most playoff games in MLB history.
The Celtics
The Boston Celtics are one of the most successful teams in sports history, having won 17 NBA Championships. They are based in Boston, Massachusetts and play their games at TD Garden.
The team was founded in 1946 by Boston Garden-Arena Corporation President Walter Brown, as a member of the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The BAA merged with the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1949 and became the NBA.
They won their first NBA title in 1957 under coach Red Auerbach. His team was stocked with Hall of Famers including Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, and Tom Heinsohn.
The team won eight titles in a row from 1958-1966 under center Bill Russell. It also featured the legendary Dave Cowens, Paul Silas, and Jo Jo White.
The Bruins
The Boston Bruins are a professional ice hockey team that competes in the Atlantic Division of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Bruins have been in existence since 1924, making them the third-oldest NHL team and the oldest in the United States.
They are one of the Original Six teams in the NHL along with the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers. They have won six Stanley Cup championships, which is tied for the fourth most of all-time and second most of any American-based team in the NHL.
In 1924, owner Charles Adams held a contest to name his hockey club. He hoped to find a name that would relate to an untamed animal with size, strength, agility, ferocity and cunning.
The Patriots
The New England Patriots are one of the most successful teams in the NFL. They have won nine Super Bowls, the most in league history.
Founded in Boston, they were a charter member of the American Football League before joining the NFL through a merger in 1970. The Patriots were considered a mediocre team in the 1970s, but they began to make serious inroads under coach Raymond Berry in the 1980s.
Their success was reflected in the fact that their franchise record is a whopping 126 victories. They also held NFL records for most wins in a ten-year span and longest winning streaks in both regular season and playoff games.
The Patriots had a deep influence in America and the world. They used Arsenal Gear to control information in the United States and around the globe through their proxy AIs GW, who was designed to censor or delete anything that would loosen their grip on the country.
