Does Your Favourite Jewellery Store Have an In-House Diamond Grader?

Diamonds are one of the most valuable and sought-after gems in the world. They also happen to be some of the hardest stones to fake. But frauds will be frauds, and they’ll always find ways to deceive people. In fact, counterfeiting is an entire industry in itself, and the diamond jewellery industry isn’t saved.

The best diamond dealers have an in-house grader use a diamond grading scale to grade each diamond they source from suppliers and wholesalers. They’ll often go so far as to get an outside opinion to ensure accuracy before making their final purchase decision. If a dealer doesn’t do these things, it’s probably because they don’t care about quality diamonds or customer satisfaction—and if that’s true, then you should walk away.

When you go shopping online for diamond earrings Australia, it would be best to ask jewellery stores how they grade diamonds, and better yet, if they have their own graders.

The Value of Professional Diamond Graders

A professional diamond grader will use equipment designed to measure all the factors that contribute to a diamond’s beauty and rarity, including carat weight (size), colour, clarity, cut grade (proportionality and symmetry), fluorescence, inclusions or blemishes inside the stone, polish quality (the surface smoothness) and more.

If you’re buying online—which is highly advisable when it comes to diamonds—be sure your supplier has an independent lab grading its loose stones. This way, you can be 100% certain there aren’t any nasty surprises once the item finally arrives!

That being said, even if they have in-house graders, don’t take them at their word. Ask to see a picture of the diamond with its grading certificate and compare it against other certificates from different graders you can find online (don’t worry, it’s easy!). If all else fails, consider getting your own gem-testing equipment!

A note about colour: If there are no fancy words involved in describing a colourless stone, be suspicious. Most good diamonds have their own unique names derived from Arabic or Indian languages that accurately describe how they look—these will often include an “F” for those gems graded as completely colourless. In this case, the lack of specificity is most likely because the supplier doesn’t really know what they have on their hands! And again, if anyone tries to sell you a diamond without a grading report, get out.

If You’re Buying Online…

Online markets are usually pretty convenient since they make prices accessible on demand and allow potential customers like yourself to find exactly what they need with little effort (after all, who wants to wander around a crowded marketplace or shop in person when you can read reviews, compare prices and place an order without ever leaving the comfort of your home?).

That being said, there are issues with online shopping that many people don’t think about before making their purchase—and diamonds are no exception.

If you’re buying from an online store that isn’t willing to give out detailed information regarding how they grade their stones (or even provide certification altogether), then chances are good they aren’t entirely legitimate!

Do you know that a lot of people don’t even realise the importance of diamond grading? If you’re looking for a new piece of jewellery, make sure to ask if your trusted jeweller has an in-house grader. And as always, it’s best to buy from a reputable store with knowledgeable staff who can help guide customers through the process.
