The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new way of providing support for people with a disability, their families, and carers. The NDIS will provide about 460,000 Australians aged under 65 with a permanent and significant disability with the reasonable and necessary support they need to live an ordinary life.

The NDIS will start in stages because it takes time to build a new system. The first stage started on 1 July 2013 in the Barwon area of Victoria for people aged up to 64 years who have an intellectual disability, physical disability, or both.

From July 2016, the NDIS will gradually roll out across Australia. People living in the Hunter New England region of NSW, South Australia, Tasmania, and the ACT will start to enter the Scheme from this time. By July 2019, everyone who is eligible should be able to access the NDIS.
