Why is Black Friday on a Friday?

Black Friday falls on Friday after Thanksgiving.

We need to explain why Thanksgiving falls on Thursday in order to answer the question “Why Black Friday falls on Friday ?”

In the 17th century, Thanksgiving was first established. Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks for the harvest and previous year’s blessings.

In the United States, prayers and ceremonies that were used to display public religious piety are not permitted to be made a national holiday. This is partly due to the separation of church and state. It should not be a national day, according to Thomas Jefferson. The date of the celebration varied from one state or another.

The nationalization of the holiday wasn’t achieved until A. Lincoln’s era, 1863. Lincoln declared Thursday, November 26, 1863, Thanksgiving, after 40 years of campaigning by Sarah Josepha Hale, Sarah Josepha Hale’s writer. The ongoing civil war meant that Lincoln urged his countrymen to “set aside the last Thursday of November next, and observe a day of Thanksgiving, and Praise.” The 1870s saw the finalization of nationalization.

Black Friday’s story continues two centuries later at the close of the Great Depression in 1939. This was the day that President F.D. Roosevelt tried to make a difference. Roosevelt tried to boost the economy’s potential by increasing holiday shopping options, extending them for one week, and other measures.

It was true: Thanksgiving was moved to the third Thursday in November. The proclamation was not received well. Two years later, Congress passed the proclamation and President Obama made Thanksgiving a federal holiday in America. It is observed on the fourth Thursday in November.

“Black Friday” Was a Bad Idea for a Long Time

The stock market scandal made the original Black Friday in 1896 irrelevant year after year. The term “Black Friday” became less relevant over time.

This term was used to describe a new scenario 100 years later. Black Friday was first associated with post-Thanksgiving. Philadelphia was able to make this change.

The streets became human rivers, just like any other major US metropolis during the boom period. Shoppers and tourists flood the streets every day in Turkey. The American college football rivalry match took place on Saturday. This was good news for businesses, but not so for police officers. Many police officers were forced to work overtime to deal with the chaos. This was impossible for most people. Officers used the terms Black Friday or Black Saturday to describe their lives following Thanksgiving.

Shopkeepers and merchants in Philadelphia tried to change the business’ name after Thanksgiving. The businesses were rebranded as “Big Friday” and “Big Saturday”, which are more appealing to customers.

Black Friday is the day it takes place

Black Friday was the first time the term was used to describe a fortunate event in the 1980s. This marked the turning point in Black Friday’s history.

Back in the days of less technology, bookkeeping, and other financial records were still done on paper. Negative numbers were marked with a red wink while positive ones were printed with black ink.

Many retailers suffered losses throughout the year, starting in January and ending in November. They began to profit after Thanksgiving when the holiday season started. They would stop being “in red” after that. They would instead place the red pen into the drawer and pull out the black pen. It was profit time.

Over the years, Black Friday has gained in popularity.

The Saturday before Christmas was the biggest shopping day in the early 2000s when we were still small tech companies.
