How long is a century

Think back to a time when you were sitting alone, bored to death, and had nothing to do. Suddenly this question pops into your mind. I wonder how long is a century in months? how many days in a century? or even better, how many minutes or seconds in a century?

Well, you are not alone in asking these questions. We also asked this question and did the math, so you didn’t have to do it. And here is what we found out.

Origin of Century

The word “Century” comes from the Latin. It is derived from the word “Centum” which means one hundred. We normally associate the word century with 100 years but it is used for stuff too, like the races whether in miles, meters, or yards are called a century when passing a hundred unit.

A batsman in cricket scores a century when he gets a hundred runs. But the most famous use of the word comes from the Roman Army. As with any army the Romans used to divide theirs into smaller units. One such unit was the Roman Century, a unit of 100 men, that surprisingly had only 80 men.

Why 80 men you wonder? That is for you to find out another day. For now, let us tell you how long is a century. Let’s start with the easy ones and move towards some harder math.

How Long is a Century in Years?

This is an easy one that we all know, there are 100 years to a century.

How Long is a Century in Months?

This is also easy to calculate. There are 12 months to a year, so we multiply 12 by 100 and we get 1200 months. So now we know a century is 1200 months long.

How Long is a Century in Weeks?

We know there are 4 weeks to a month. But there are extra days as well, so when you add them all. There are 52 weeks in a year. Multiply that by 100 and we get 5200 weeks in a century.

How Long is a Century in Days?

Now here is when things get tricky. There are four months with 30 days, that are April, June, September, and November. Then we have seven months with 31 days, that January, March, May, July, August, October and December. And let’s not forget February with its 28 days, except when it is a leap year with 29 days.

So, we break down the math according to the months and then add them all together. The results are as follows.

  • 30 days multiplied by 4 gives us 120 days.
  • 31 days multiplied by 7 gives us 217 days.
  • Add to that the 28 days for February, 29 if it’s a leap year and we get 365 days (366 for a leap year.
  • Leap year comes every 4 years, so to keep things even we make every year 365.25 days.
  • Multiply that with 100 and we get 36,525 days in a century.

How Long is a Century in Hours?

Time to make things a bit more interesting. How many hours to a century? We already know there are 365.25 days to a year and we know that there are 24 hours to a day. So let us do the math.

  • We multiply 365.25 by 24 to get 8766 hours in a year.
  • We multiply this number by 100 and we get 876,600 hours in a century.

How Long is a Century in Minutes?

I think most of us have the pattern down by now. We know there are 60 minutes to an hour and 876600 hours to a century. So, we multiply 60 by 876,600 and we get 52,596,000 minutes.

How Long is a Century in Seconds?

We keep following the same pattern as above. We again know that there are 60 seconds to a minute and we have 52,596,000 minutes in a century. We multiply both and get 3,155,760,000 seconds in a century.

How long is half a century?

This is very easy to calculate. We divide each of the above values by 2 and we find out our results. There are:

  • 50 Years in half a century.
  • 600 Months in half a century.
  • 2600 Weeks in half a century.
  • 18,262.5 Days in half a century.
  • 438,300 Hours in half a century.
  • 26,298,000 Minutes in half a century.
  • 1,577,880,000 Seconds in half a century.

How long is a quarter of a century?

This is also very easy to calculate. We divide the values from half a century by 2 and we find out how long a quarter of a century is in terms of:

  • 25 Years in a quarter of a century.
  • 300 Months in a quarter of a century.
  • 1300 Weeks in a quarter of a century.
  • 9,131.25 Days in a quarter of a century.
  • 219,150 Hours in a quarter of a century.
  • 13,149,000 Minutes in a quarter of a century.
  • 788,940,000 Seconds in a quarter of a century.

How long is a decade?

This is also very easy to calculate. Instead of dividing our initial values by 2, we divide them by 10 and we get our results.

  • 10 years in a decade.
  • 120 months in a decade.
  • 520 weeks in a decade.
  • 3,652.5 days in a decade.
  • 876,60 hours in a decade.
  • 52,596,00 minutes in a decade.
  • 3,155,760,00 seconds in a decade.

How long is a century and a half?

Why not go the other direction and see how long is a century and a half in months, weeks etc? It is easy to calculate, we simply add the values we got from the century with the values we got from half a century and we get:

  • 150 years in a century and a half.
  • 1800 months in a century and a half.
  • 7800 weeks in a century and a half.
  • 54,787.5 days in a century and a half.
  • 1,314,900 hours in a century and a half.
  • 78,894,000 minutes in a century and a half.
  • 4,733,640,000 seconds in a century and a half.

It took us a while to do the math but it certainly feels good to have all the answers. Just as good as you will feel to have all the answers.
