Okay, it’s pretty much impossible to provide a precise estimate of the number of wheels in the globe. After all, we’ve been producing more since the first wheel was created approximately 3,500 BCE, and we continue to do so.
Even Hot Wheels generates close to 15 vehicles each second, and in 2020 alone, almost 152,971 passenger cars were produced (that’s 17 per second!). And it doesn’t include all the wheels made every day for office chairs, shopping carts, aeroplanes, bicycles, and other non-Hot Wheels toys.
Let’s break down the many sorts of wheels to get a good idea of how many there are in the globe.
Cars

Today, there are 1.446 billion automobiles on the planet. You’re looking at 5.784 billion wheels when you multiply that by four, the typical number of wheels on a conventional contemporary passenger automobile.
But hold on, you say (in a smug, anti-wheel voice). Aren’t there often the same number of doors and wheels on cars?
The majority of automobiles produced worldwide are sedans, four-door SUVs, and other vehicles with an apparent wheel-to-door ratio of 4:1. With 37.5 million units sold, the Toyota Corolla is the best-selling automobile of all time. It has four doors and four wheels, which seems like a wash.

Since Hot Wheels alone has sold more than six billion automobiles, there are already almost 24 billion little wheels in existence. Since these miniatures lack functional doors, every single one of those wheels remains in the country. Millions of little construction vehicles from Hasbro’s Tonka have been sold, including almost 15 million of the recognisable yellow Mighty Dump Truck. Hello, 60,000,000 additional wheels.
We could go on, but it would be impossible for us to total up the sales of every single toy vehicle manufacturer. Let’s just say that if the gears and steering wheel argument didn’t persuade you, the toy business easily creates more wheels per second than doors throughout the world.
Motorcycles and bicycles
You just need two wheels sometimes, just ask any bike or motorbike fanatic!
There are currently over 1 billion bicycles in use worldwide, with the first one being created by German inventor Karl von Drais in 1817. Contrarily, there are just 49 million motorcycles worldwide now; Gottlieb Daimler created them in 1885.
We add at least 2 billion wheels between bicycles and motorbikes, and that doesn’t include gears!
Other wheels: trucks, furniture, and shopping carts
Wheels clearly outnumber doors between automobiles, toys, and other wheeled vehicles. Examine your house and area if you’re still not persuaded.
Thanks to working from home, do you have an office chair in your spare room? Five wheels on average are there. Wheels are seen on hand trucks, trailers, strollers for babies, and shopping carts (and no doors). If your home has any furniture with casters, those count as wheels as well. If we’re being very precise, every sliding drawer you have in your house needs at least a few wheels to work.
The conclusion
No matter that we are far from having a precise count of all the wheels in existence. There may be 37 billion wheels in the world, but we have already recognised many more than that—far more than there are doors.
