World-renowned brand TCL has established a good reputation for producing affordable televisions equipped with streaming capabilities. By 2020, the Chinese brand will have the second largest market share in North America – but should you buy a TCL television?
TCL televisions are often quite reliable and pocket-friendly compared to those given by Samsung, Sony, and LG, so, unsurprisingly, consumers are tempted. And, despite the low prices, TCL smart TV does not skimp on features – the business even provides QLED models that enable Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos.
However, is the TCL smart TV genuinely good? And should you get one if a fantastic deal becomes available? While we haven’t had the opportunity to test every TCL television on the market, we have picked through their spec sheets and selected some attractive prices for your consideration.
Should you buy a TCL smart TV?
TCL now provides sets powered by Roku and Google, allowing you to pick between two of the greatest smart TV systems available.
Thus, it checks a lot of boxes in terms of features, but what about image quality? We’ve only evaluated a small portion of TCL’s offerings, but from what we’ve seen, the company has stepped up its game in the previous year. For instance, the 55RP620K just earned five stars in our review.
We’d advise you to lower your expectations for the ultimate 4K HDR performance. If you’re looking for the true vision of 4K HDR video, one of these finest TVs from Sony, Samsung, LG, or Panasonic may be a better fit.
TCL Roku TV
TCL partnered with Roku a few years ago and now provides HD and 4K UHD televisions in various styles and sizes. Our favourite Tv is the RP620K. It features 4K UHD resolution and UHD upscaling for content with a lower resolution. Additionally, it supports high dynamic range formats such as HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision and can handle Dolby Atmos audio for an external Atmos-certified speaker.
In our recent review, we remarked that the RP620K delivers “a mature visual and sound experience,” making it “another excellent Roku TV for the UK market.”
Both the 5- and 6-series models feature an Auto Game Mode with a reported input lag time of 15ms. Meanwhile, Roku TV boasts one of the most robust collections of streaming services available. TCL smart TV also offers a good selection of QLED screens in the United Kingdom, including the C71 and C81.
Both have QLED (Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode) panels and support the complete range of high dynamic range (HDR) formats, including Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR, and HLG. They are powered by Android TV and include built-in Freeview Play and Google Assistant voice control. Additionally, Alexa compatibility enables voice control via Amazon Alexa devices.
TCL officially entered the major leagues in September 2021 by announcing the world’s first miniLED televisions. The Latest TCL smart TV X92 Pro Series steals the show with its 85-inch ultra-thin OD Zero Mini LED display. Additionally, it features an integrated 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos sound system made by Onkyo and TCL’s Game Master Pro feature bundle, which qualifies this model as the official Call Of Duty television. The basic X92 and the X92 Pro are both powered by the Google TV operating system.
As one of the company’s most popular models, the 2021 R635 is an excellent location to start your search. It supports Dolby Vision HDR (but not HDR10+) and increases the contrast and colour reproduction of its QLED display with Mini-LED illumination.
This model features a THX Certified Game Mode, allowing it to compete with some top gaming televisions.
TCL appears to be a brand on the rise in the UK, the US, and beyond. There are numerous models to pick from, ranging from entry-level to massive 8K QLED displays. Of course, TCL smart TV is not the only affordable television brand available, and with bargains flooding the internet, you may want to check out our selection of the top TV offers.
