Hajj And Umrah

Hajj and Umrah are two different spiritual voyages undertaken by the Muslim people. Muslims from different countries visit Makkah & Madina to perform these two holy pilgrimages. This helps them earn spiritual merits and brings inner peace as well as self-renewal. It also grants them forgiveness for their sins of the past.

What Is Hajj And Umrah?

What is hajj and umrah? It is perhaps one of the most asked questions. Hajj is the annual pilgrimage that is a part of one of the five pillars of Islam. The acts performed during this pilgrimage were established by the Holy Prophet. The Quran dictates that these rituals can be traced back to Prophet Ibrahim. Performing these rituals helps Muslims with their faith in Allah and earns merit.

Umrah is the pilgrimage performed in Mecca, the great thing about this pilgrimage is that it can be performed any time of the year. It helps a Muslim gain peace and frees that person from the sins of their past.

Differences between Umrah and Hajj:

They both are extremely important to Muslims but there is a lot of difference between hajj and Umrah. They differ mostly based on rituals and importance. Following are some of the differences between Hajj and Umrah.

Significance: According to the Islamic religion, Hajj is considered an obligatory pilgrimage that every Muslim has to perform at least once in their life, granted they do have the financial means to perform the pilgrimage. The amount of importance given to both these pilgrimages is different. It is highly recommended that you perform Umrah but is not mandatory.

Timing: The good thing about Umrah is that it can be performed at any time of the year. However, hajj can only be performed only once during the year. Hajj can only be performed during the month of Dhu al Hijjah.

Obligatory Acts: The obligatory acts included in Umrah are assuming the state of Ihram after the intention of Umrah, performing Tawaf, and taking out Sayi between the hills of Safa and Marwa. The male has to shave the head and the women have to clip a portion of their hair. For hajj, Muslims need Ihram from Meeqat, stand on Arafah until sunset, stay the night at Muzdalifah and stay the night in Mina during Tashreeq, stone the Jamarat, shave the hair, and finally, perform farewell circumambulation.

The time needed for the pilgrimage: The time needed for each pilgrimage is different. Umrah can be performed in just a few hours but Hajj takes at least 5 to 6 days to complete. The difference for this time is due to the rituals that are performed during the completion of each pilgrimage.

All in all:

These are just some of the differences between the two holy pilgrimages, although many differences separate these two pilgrimages, there are still similarities between Hajj and Umrah, both are considered extremely important by the Muslim community.

Millions of Muslims visit Saudi Arabia to perform these holy pilgrimages. These differences add to the beauty of the pilgrimages and despite the fact that Hajj is mandatory and Umrah isn’t, Muslims all over the world try to perform both the pilgrimages to gain peace and satisfaction.
