Usually, when you hear politicians and lawmakers being arraigned or facing charges in a court of law, your mind directly goes to Donald Trump who is facing a multitude of cases, or someone related to him or the Republican Party.

But this time for a change it is the Democratic Senator from New Jersey who is being arraigned for obstruction of Justice. His case is not a new one goes back to 2022 when questions were raised about his and his wife’s involvement in accepting gifts through an intermediary in return for favorable treatment for an Egyptian firm. (Cohen, 2024)

In 2023 he was formally charged by the Justice Department for taking bribes and illegally acting as an agent for the Government of Egypt. The senator however denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty, even when more charges were filed later on.

There has been constant pressure on him, even from within his own party for him to resign, which he has refused to do so, only conceding to step down from his chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from which he was replaced by a fellow democratic senator Ben Cardin.

Now with the arraignment happening, the criminal trial is soon to follow on May 6 and things are not looking good for him or his wife and only time will tell what will become of Senator Bob Menendez.
