Although the capital city of Malta may not be the largest in the European Union it is rich with history, culture, art, and stunning architecture. Valletta boasts facts that are unmatched by other capitals. Here are some good reasons to visit the capital city of Maltese.

The Pub is open for drinks

The pub is located on Valletta’s Main Street. This spot is very popular with Brits. This pub isn’t any ordinary pub. The actual name of the place is The Pub. This English drinking hole is famous because it is where Oliver Reed, BAFTA-winning actor, had his last sips. Reed died here after a night of heavy drinking while filming Gladiator in Malta. Reed’s final hours are remembered by the walls which attract visitors every day. Newspaper clippings and memorabilia decorate the walls.

Step back in the past among the buildings

Valletta is described in many ways as an architectural jewel. St John’s Co-Cathedral has 25 spectacular churches. Also, the magnificent Baroque buildings, luxurious palaces, and lushly landscaped gardens make it a stunning place to visit.

The Art

Valletta is home, undoubtedly, to some of the world’s greatest art. The National Museum of Fine Arts contains paintings, silverware, and multi-medium and bronze sculptures from well-known local and international artists.

Walk on the Wild Side

Valletta’s most prominent street, Strait Street in the 19th-mid-20th centuries was the center of the island. Strait Street was bustling with locals as well as American and British Military men. British called this street “The Gut” for its ability to bring together all classes at night through celebrations. The street has many original buildings today, but there are restaurants, bars, and places to stay with residents behind its exterior walls.

A Show in Style

The Manoel Theatre built in 1731 was funded by the Knights of Malta. The theatre, which survived (practically intact) both World Wars and served as an aircraft raid shelter, is still in operation. The theatre’s original features remain intact, while its exterior and interior exude elegance. You can now enjoy a wide range of genres, including operas, pantomimes, or recitals.

Eat…Well

There is no shortage in Valletta’s restaurants and, unlike other capitals of the world, it has many to offer. Find the right place for you to grab a bite, whether it’s a tasty date cake at a local kiosk or fine dining. A wide range of cuisines can be found within easy walking distance from the main pedestrianized street. These hidden gems are often less well-known and much more peaceful than the main streets.

Reabsorb History to Its Fullest

Valletta is a place where visitors can take in the rich history of Malta in stages. The range of museums in Valletta, both indoors or outdoors, is an ideal place for budding historians to get a firsthand look at the difficulties and triumphs, and even the joyous moments, that Malta has seen. It’s time to set a schedule and travel through the past. Visit museums such as history, archaeology, Grand Masters Palace, and The Great Siege.

Shop

You can find many shops in Valletta on the high streets of Europe, but some are very special. You won’t find the typical souvenir shop here. But there are unique places where you can pick up handmade products sourced from all over Malta. You won’t go home empty-handed, with everything from made-onsite cookies to richly scented soaps. One of the best things about a jar filled with prickly Pearl Jam is that it’s so easy to resist.

Boat Tours

Theboat tours to nearby islands through the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. But it is equally amazing. Visit the three fortified communities of Cospicua Vittoriosa and Senglea. All three played important roles in the Great Siege. Relax and enjoy the company of a professional guide as you visit the monuments and creeks.
