The History of Mercedes-Benz:

Mercedes-Benz is a division of Daimler AG, which was founded in Stuttgart in 1919. The Stuttgart-based company acquired motorcycle manufacturing group Gottlieb Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft in 1922 and began producing petrol engines. During the 1920s Mercedes-Benz began producing cars, and went on to grow at an impressive rate.

During the early 1920s Mercedes-Benz produced just over 100,000 vehicles. In 1926 they joined forces with Benz and the three companies were incorporated under the name Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft.

During the 1950s Mercedes-Benz began producing a lot more cars, and their models were known for their reliability and quiet running. The company also expanded into the United States, and began producing automobiles in 1948.

What is Mercedes-Benz doing right in the luxury automobile segment?

Mercedes-Benz stands apart from other luxury carmakers in the luxury market with its pioneering technological vision and rigorous testing processes. It remains a leading innovator in this space. The popularity of Mercedes-Benz and BMW in the car market is primarily down to these technological advances. In fact, Mercedes-Benz has the largest number of patents in the automotive industry.

This might not be the case in the mass-market segment, which is largely a battle of the brands and manufacturing models of smaller brands, based on comparatively lower prices.

This all forms a solid foundation for an exceptional engineering machine. A well-designed and equipped car is likely to sell like hot cakes.

What is Mercedes-Benz doing wrong in the luxury automobile segment?

Mercedes-Benz is still the market leader in terms of sales but has lost some of its lead position to BMW over the last few years. Mercedes-Benz sold 2,96,762 cars in 2016 compared to BMW’s 2,76,685 cars. The reason that BMW overtook Mercedes-Benz is not a direct result of their internal combustion engine powered vehicles. BMW has a more diverse car lineup than Mercedes-Benz does and therefore is able to appeal to a larger market. BMW also doesn’t carry the same internal combustion engine associated history as MercedesBenz.

Instead the main reason that BMW overtook Mercedes-Benz was due to the introduction of the new C-Class and the S-Class models. These two vehicles are the best selling models in their class in the world and BMW is capitalizing on that.
